“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything” Plato
Imagine listening to your favourite music on full blast on your couch. Multiply it tenfold and add to that brilliant lighting and a crowd to sing along with you. You might as well have a musical orgasm in your head. That was typically the setting at the EX on the beach concert by The Exiles, a four piece guitar based pop/rock bandin Qatar.
Not a big concert goer, I was in two minds when they asked me shoot their gig. But just a few minutes into the concert it was already a tete-a-tete between my camera and the music. I was startled athow the euphoria and the excitement surrounding the show was lifting my spirits and kept presenting some brilliant photograph worthy moments to capture. The surprise was, I not only captured simple things like a passionate head bang and the musicians tugging at strings of guitar, but also ended up capturing the emotion and things as abstract as the music in the air! See for yourself and you will believe.
I knew it would be difficult to navigate through the high voltage crowd and take pictures, so my strategy was to use the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8” to shoot pictures. I did use that a lot. But once the gig picked up momentum, I found myself cheering and jumping along with the audience and was surprised to see that I had moved much closer to the stage. I instinctively took out my Canon 50mm f1.8 and Canon 85 mm f1.8 and shot the rest of the pictures!
From the day I started viewing the world through the lens I have been living in a beautiful parallel universe with immense potential and possibilities. Occasions like these remind me why I love doing this so much.
